Am I crazy?
I just had a baby and I feel down. Having a baby is one of life’s most wonderful moments. But, experts say as many as 60-80% of new moms experience some emotional issues. You may find yourself anxious or irritable, and you may cry unexpectedly. You may also find yourself unable to sleep. This is normal, and could last from a few days to a couple of weeks. If these problems continue after two weeks, you may want to seek help from a professional, as it could be clinical depression.

What causes postpartum depression?
No one knows for sure what causes postpartum depression. Hormones may play a part, as levels drop following delivery. Other things which may contribute include environmental, genetic, and biochemical factors.

What are the symptoms?
If you experience any of these symptoms that last longer than two weeks after delivery, you may have postpartum depression: sadness or crying that lasts all day, no interest in your usual activities, a change in your appetite, anxiousness, guilt feelings, panic attacks, trouble concentrating, moodiness, or suicidal thoughts. Only your doctor can decide if your symptoms are caused by postpartum depression.

What do I do now?
There are several things you can do to alleviate some of your symptoms. Get plenty of rest – sleep when your baby is sleeping. Don’t neglect your own health, eat healthy meals and get some exercise when you can. Don’t isolate yourself; get help from family, friends, or paid professionals. Talk to your spouse about your feelings, and ask for what you need. Don’t give in to guilt feelings. Just do what you can – don’t feel you are responsible for everything right now. Everyone will have advice, but don’t feel like you have to take it. The best advice is likely to come from your healthcare provider.
